Cutting head assemblies for sheet-metal lines
A fibre laser cutting head does more than guide the beam. It carries the nozzle, lens stack, protective window and sensing parts that keep the cut stable while the sheet moves under the head. When any part in that chain drifts, edge finish, pierce quality and cut consistency shift with it.
For shop floors in Spartan, Kempton Park and the wider East Rand, the practical issue is usually fit and function. The head must suit the machine frame, the sensor style, the lens arrangement and the gas path used on the table. We supply parts for heads used on mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium work, with bench service and on-site alignment where the assembly needs attention.
Nozzles and the cut stream they shape
Nozzles are small, but they carry a lot of weight in the final cut. Single layer nozzles are often used for direct gas delivery, while double layer nozzles help with more controlled flow on certain cutting jobs. A worn tip, a poor concentric set-up or a damaged thread can leave dross, taper or rough edges that are hard to chase out later.
- Nozzle centring for clean beam placement
- Single and double layer nozzle supply
- Thread and tip checks during servicing
- Crash damage inspection where the head has taken a hit
In practice, nozzle condition is part of the wider head picture. It works alongside lens position, gas path condition and focus setting, so the cut stays consistent across full sheets and smaller offcuts alike.
Lenses, windows and the optics stack
Focus lenses and collimator lenses do different jobs inside the cutting head. The collimator helps turn the beam into a usable path, while the focus lens places that beam at the cutting point. Protective windows sit in front of the costly optics and take the first load from spatter, dust and vapour. On busy machines, those windows can mark quickly if cleaning routines slip.
Lens cleaning has to be done with care. Finger marks, lint and poor handling can do more harm than good, especially on higher power heads. We also supply protective windows and replacement optics for shops that keep spare sets ready for planned maintenance or breakdown work.
- Focus lenses for beam placement at the material surface
- Collimator lenses for beam control inside the head
- Protective windows for spatter and dust shielding
- Cleaning routines that protect the coated surfaces
Ceramic rings and the parts that take the knocks
Ceramic rings sit at the lower end of many cutting heads and help support the nozzle area. They are one of the parts most likely to show wear after repeated changes, close approaches to the sheet or a minor crash. Once a ring is chipped or out of square, the nozzle can sit off-centre and the cut quality starts to wander.
We stock ceramic rings for replacement work, together with spare head parts for shops that keep their machines in daily use. For sheet-metal teams in Durban, Cape Town and Rustenburg, the coastal humidity and shop conditions can add extra wear on exposed components, so inspection during service matters just as much as the replacement part itself.
Capacitive sensing and focus checks
Capacitive height sensing helps the head hold the right distance from the sheet while the table moves. If that sensing drifts, the cut can mark the sheet, miss focus or struggle on thin material. The same applies to focus settings that no longer match the material thickness or the nozzle being used.
Our service work includes capacitive sensor check, focus setting check, gas path inspection and head seal rebuild. Often the fault is not one part on its own, but a small set of wear points that have grown worse over time. A clean lens, correct nozzle height and steady sensing all work together, so the machine can cut with less scrap and less chasing of small faults.
Bench service and on-site alignment for real workshop conditions
Some heads are removed from the machine and brought to the bench for a full strip, clean and inspection. Other jobs need the head aligned on site so the machine can be brought into usable condition without shifting the full unit. We handle both, depending on the fault, the space around the table and the state of the assembly.
- Bench Head Service for strip, inspection and rebuild work
- On-site Head Alignment for installed machines
- Spare Head Preparation for planned change-outs
- Lens cleaning, seal checks and nozzle set-up
